Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Partners with Minneapolis Edible Boulevards

Elder Hope Flanagan (Seneca) from Dream of Wild Health has engaged with MEB by facilitating the foraging workshops.

Everyone is invited to attend the MEB monthly cooking classes, which are being held at local community gardens this summer. We’re excited to welcome two new cooking instructors, Derek Nicholas from the Division of Indian Work and Natalia Mendez from Lengua y Corazon, in addition to Kelly Shay of Harmonious World who has been teaching classes for the last year.

Upcoming “Hearty Meals from the Garden” Cooking Classes (see Facebook for details)

July 9:  with Natalia Mendez–Celestial Garden at 2210 Emerson Ave. N.

August 13: Kelly Shay (Urban Ag. Initiative garden–location to be determined)

September 10: Natalia Mendez–Tamales y Bicicletas Garden at 2820 15th Ave. S.

October 8: Kelly Shay– Four Sisters Farm at 2839 17th Ave. S. (between Bloomington and 19th Aves.)

Do you live in the Powderhorn Park neighborhood? If so, you can now join your neighbors who live in Cedar Riverside, Ventura Village, Midtown Phillips, Phillips West and East Phillips by filling out an application for an edible boulevard.

The Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association’s (PPNA) new environmental justice community coordinator, Hindolo Pokawa, has been leading the effort to bring the two groups together, and is just as excited as we are to have Powderhorn residents be a part of our initiative.

So what exactly does that mean for the participating Southside Green Zone neighborhoods listed above? We have funding to go towards teaching people how to transform the space between the sidewalk and curb into an edible boulevard, in addition to soil testing, seeds, seedlings, organic soil, and compost. The application is posted on the Minneapolis Edible Boulevards (MEB) Facebook page, which you’re invited  to join. If you’re not on Facebook, reach out to the email below to get the application link sent to you. If you live in a  neighborhood that isn’t currently participating, contact your neighborhood association to let them know you’d like them to partner with MEB.

We can’t wait to grow with you in one way or another! Contact MinneapolisEdibleBoulevards@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Undoing extractive and exploitative relationships will require the interaction of ideas.
