Sabathani Senior Housing is located on an underutilized portion of the current Sabathani Community Center campus. Sabathani donated the land to the development.
The total development cost is approximately $11,777,292 ($245,360/unit). The development was financed with a first mortgage from Minnesota Housing, Housing Infrastructure Bonds (HIB) administered by Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB), and soft funds. The financing structure includes tax increment financing (TIF). The parcel is vacant and tax exempt, and will generate significant increment. The increment will increase the mortgage capacity.

Grand Opening of the Sabathani Senior Housing

“This is a labor of love and a legacy project,” said Jamil Ford, President of Mobilize Design & Architecture, LLC.

Minneapolis City Council President Andrea Jenkins spoke to the vision of Sabathani Senior Housing as part of a broader strategy to bring 38th Street back to its rightful glory as a community and business district and a cultural corridor. This area represents the African American community in all of its historical legacy of contribution to its communities.

As one of the five priorities she has held in her term in office, Sabathani Senior Housing is part of the 38th Street Thrive plan that includes George Floyd Square. It represents the beginning of the work and she looks forward to bringing the full vision to fruition.

CEO Scott Redd spoke about his commitment to the project and the needs it fulfills. Others in attendance included Mayor Jacob Frey, Commissioner Angela Conley and Rep. Aisha Gomez.

One of the highlights of the event was the sharing of an inaugural Sabathani resident, Betty. She came to Minneapolis from Chicago with three young sons in tow. She was given a scholarship from Hamline University and found a home in South Minneapolis. After raising her sons and successfully moving though school, she is more than grateful to be living at Sabathani now.

This is a mission moment. I can’t take credit for it, but I am glad to be a part of it.
— Sabathani CEO Scott Redd
