Adults on the Spectrum Support Group

Available Support Group: Adults on the Spectrum

In her work with adults on the spectrum, Erica Haugen, MS, MA, LMFT, has learned that most folks need more connection within the autism community. Her hope is to bring people on the spectrum together to create a space in which they can experience the kind of support that only comes from having shared experiences.

This group will be a closed group of up to 10 individuals meeting every other week starting September 18th. The group will meet in-person at our Lakeside Center building, and cost $40 a meeting.

Please note that this is a support group and is not group therapy.

To register, please email ERICA@therapy-mn.com

Real-Life Stories about Social Justice in Minneapolis

Real-Life Stories about Social Justice in Minneapolis

Join us at the Capri Theater September 14th to Celebrate the Peoples Stories in the Minneapolis Interview Project by Anne Winkler-Morey (my story is one of the stories in this project)

The Minneapolis Interview Project, in partnership with Hennepin History Museum, will present an evening of real-life stories about social justice in Minneapolis. The Minneapolis Interview Project was started in 2016 by Anne Winkler-Morey, a writer, historian, activist scholar and Southside resident. Her goal was to interview one-hundred people of different ages, races, genders, economic classes, migration experiences, as well as living in different parts of Minneapolis. She invited people to tell their life-stories that reveal hidden histories of inequity and the struggle for social justice in Minneapolis. On Thursday, September 14, Ms. Winkler-Morey and many of the people she interviewed will read from their interview transcripts. A portion of the evening’s program will also honor those participants who have passed away since contributing their interviews. The evening will also feature photographs by Minneapolis-based artist, photographer, and teacher, Eric Mueller, who joined the project in 2019, volunteering his expertise to photograph interviewees in locations that are important to them.

There will be opportunity for questions and conversation with the audience.

Doors open at 5: 30 pm, with the program beginning at 6 pm.

The event is free, but reservations are required.

Lake Street Art Drop

Visit Lake Street/Lake Street Council is proud to launch a new initiative to bring free art drops to support our vibrant Lake Street corridor!

An art drop is when an artist leaves artwork in a public place, like a treasure hunt for the community. Each piece of artwork is free to whoever finds it first and makes local art accessible to anyone willing to go exploring.

Lake Street Art Drop is a free scavenger hunt for local art. The first person to find each piece gets to keep it.

To participate, head to Lake Street in the Uptown neighborhood with your favorite people!
At 6:00 pm, we will start posting photo hints of the hiding places for these art treasures on our stories. Hints are staggered out every 5-10 minutes. Follow the hints to find the art! If you’re the first person to find it, it’s yours to keep. Message us when you find a piece so we know it's been claimed. Plus - post your successful finds and tag us and the artist so we can celebrate with you!

We encourage you to come early or stay after the drop for dinner, drinks, or shopping at a local Lake Street business!

Save the dates for every First Thursday at 6:00 pm from May through September and follow us on Facebook (we may have a couple bonus art drops too!). We'll rotate locations all along the Lake Street corridor!

Health Equity Event

Health Equity Event

Seward Neighborhood Group and Longfellow Community Council are hosting a health equity event on Sunday, August 20th from 11am to 3pm at Brackett Park.

This event will feature health screenings, narcan trainings, dental screenings , and haircuts all for free. There will be a resource fair, free clothing store, yoga and a community art project with music from KRSM. Minnesota has some of the greatest health disparities in the country between white people and BIPOC. There are organizations throughout the Twin Cities that have programs aimed at addressing these disparities but there can often be barriers to access, especially for our unhoused neighbors. With this event SNG and LCC hope to bring services to people in one place in an attempt to eliminate some of those barriers. Health is often viewed through an individualistic lens, but we are all healthier when our communities are healthy.

Metro Transit will be offering free rides to the event – fill out the survey on longfellow.org or sng.org to get yours. This event is funded in part thanks to a grant from Hennepin County and is supported by KRSM and Metro Transit. Find the full list of services, resources, and activities go to sng.org or longfellow.org.

• Feel the stability of ground
• Move with the ease and pleasure of flow
• Tap into the power of will and self-determination
• Experience the joy of connection
• Cultivate the strength of your voice and vision

In this experiential workshop, empowerment-based self-defense blends with yoga, somatic therapies, hands-on healing, guided imagery and ritual arts. We will explore practices to help align our actions with our core values. We will practice ways to decrease fear and reactivity, build confidence and mobilize resources for constructive social change.

We will use astrology as a framework for understanding the energy within and around us, learning about boundaries from Saturn, passion and resistance from Mars, safety from the Moon, compassion and connection from Venus and Jupiter, and self-expression from Mercury, all while anchored in the life-force of the Sun.

Metamorphosis: A Community Healing Arts Event with Angela Two Stars

Metamorphosis is a participatory installation by artist, Angela Two Stars and in collaboration with Pangea World Theater, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, and Longfellow Rising as part of Public Arts St. Paul's Wakpa Triennial Art Festival.

Come, join in community healing, and create your own butterfly designs to add to this art.

Metamorphosis grows from The Transition Stage (2021), a temporary community cocoon installation, which served as a vessel for community laments, hopes, dreams, and mottos of strength as the Longfellow neighborhood and the city of Minneapolis moved towards growth, redevelopment and healing after the 2020 murder of George Floyd and subsequent uprisings that caused destruction and devastation to the Longfellow neighborhood.

Metamorphosis is a two-sided mural. One side features the written contributions from The Transition Stage chrysalis installation, a reminder of the losses experienced after the uprisings of 2020, but also a reminder of the resilience and hope of the Longfellow neighborhood and how together, we can rebuild. The other side of the artwork is a butterfly scene — the representation of the transformation, rebuilding, and strength of the community.

Place + Making

Place + Making

Mutual care, history, interconnectedness, and resilience are but a few of the many things we can learn from plants and the places we are rooted within. This summer, learn about the place where the Walker Art Center currently resides, which was once an expanse of marshland and meadow, and the meanings it holds for Dakota, Ojibwe, and Indigenous people from other Native nations who live in the community today.

Find inspiration in the natural world while exploring the native plants found around the Walker campus and the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. The Walker’s library will also host an installation of artists’ books made with unusual or natural fiber materials. Throughout the evening, local artists will be stationed in the greenspace with materials and instructions for creative activities open to all ages and experience levels.

Galleries are open late and free on Thursday nights from 5–9 pm.

The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden is a project of the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board.
